Guilin is a beautiful city located in China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region. It was one of China’s first destinations open for tourists and has since become one of the most popular. The city itself is beautiful and has highlighted some of the region’s natural features in creating it. It is surrounded by two rivers and spotted with many lakes and karst peaks.
The area is home to two of the country’s most popular destinations – Guilin and Yangshuo – that lie just 60 km from one another. They are connected by a the beautiful, meandering Li River. When looking at the river and the surrounding landscape studded by karst peaks it is no wonder it has become such a popular destination – it is stunning. (Some visitors even claim that this is the most beautiful landscape in the world, who can blame them?)
Visiting the Area
Visitors often choose to explore the area by river cruise. It immerses them among other locals who have been utilizing the river for thousands of years. The slow current relays the calm, easy mood of the region. It also gives the the chance to enjoy the lush, green peaks that line the banks. While the river is a truly unique way to visit the area – but is not the only way – there is also the “mountain experience”. There are a number of nearby hills to explore through hiking and climbing. Some even choose to continue to explore below the surface in some of the many area caves.
While we must admit that the area is beautiful year-round, it is often recommended to visit in the spring, when the greenery is at its best. From the river or fully immersed on a hike, it is sure to be a unique experience. Spring is also the time when fogs and mists are present. From a photography standpoint, it lends to giving the final image more moodiness.
Insider tip: If you’re looking for clear days when the weather is still good, shoot for fall.
